Telia launches 5G Finland Network with Nokia and Tekes

Telia Finland has announced the launch of the 5G Finland Network at the Telia Digitalist IoT Forum at Tennispalatsi in Helsinki. Its first partners are Nokia and Tekes, but Telia invites any pioneering Finnish companies and organisations to join. The goal is to create and pilot useful applications and services over 5G.

Telia said 5G and IoT will revolutionise corporate production processes, services and society as a whole. Technology Director Jari Collin said extensive cooperation can ensure that Finland is able to cope with the tremendous transformation that is under way.

Nokia customer relationship manager Susanna Patia said that Nokia’s vision in 2011 had been for mobile data use to reach 1 GB per user per day in 2020. In Finland, this will probably be reached by the end of 2017, she said.

Tekes 5thGear programme manager Mika Klemettinen said Tekes has been strongly involved in supporting the Finnish 5G research and development ecosystem, the most visible of which is 5G Test Network Finland (5gtnf.fi). It now wants to help domestic companies take the next step towards 5G and gain an international competitive edge by experimenting in pre-commercial environments.
