Telstra in talks to acquire Digicel Pacific in deal backed by Australian govt

Telstra has confirmed it is in talks to acquire mobile operator Digicel Pacific in the South Pacific region, in partnership with the Australian government. This follows a report in The Age/Sydney Morning Herald on 17 July.

Digicel Pacific provides communications services across Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Nauru, Tonga and Vanuatu, and generated EBITDA of USD 235 million in calendar year 2020. Telstra said the talks are incomplete with no certainty of a deal being agreed, and will update the market as appropriate. 

Telstra said it was approached by the Australian government to initially provide technical advice in relation to Digicel Pacific. If Telstra moved forward with a deal, the government would provide financial and strategic risk management support. Telstra's equity investment would also be the minor portion of any deal.

Papua New Guinea's National Information and Communications Technology Authority (Nicta) has approved the transfer of licensing rights to Telstra as a result of its acquisition of Digicel Pacific, The National reported. ICT Minister Timothy Masiu said Nicta's decision was independent and governed by enabling legislation. Masiu said the procedure has now been exhausted and that a decision has been made and that the government, Digicel and Telstra can now move forward with providing telecoms goods and services

Telstra has partnered with the Australian government to acquire Digicel Pacific, the mobile operator active in Papua New Guinea, Nauru, Samoa, Tonga and Vanuatu, and Fiji. Digicel Pacific has around 1,700 employees and 2.5 million subscribers, from retail customers through to large enterprises. The business generated EBITDA of USD 233 million for the financial year ended 31 March 2021, and an EBITDA margin of 54 percent.

Digicel service revenues drop 2% to USD 538 mln in March quarter

Caribbean-focused operator Digicel reported underlying service revenues down 2 percent year on year to USD 538 million in its fiscal fourth quarter to the end of March, reports the Irish Times, citing executives attending the company's earnings call with creditors. Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) came in at USD 253 million, a 3 percent year on year decline, attributed to ongoing Covid-19 impact in its 32 markets in the Caribbean, Central America and Asia-Pacific.

Australian operator Telstra has announced that a consortium comprising the Future Fund, Commonwealth Superannuation Corporation and Sunsuper will become a strategic partner in Telstra InfraCo Towers after agreeing to acquire a 49 percent interest. Telstra's Towers business currently has around 8,200 towers across Australia.

Digicel Group has announced that Leslie Buckley, who currently serves as the company's vice-chairman, has retired from the Digicel board, effective immediately. Buckley now plans to focus on his various business and family interests in Ireland. He will remain as a senior advisor and as president emeritus of Digicel.

Digicel Fiji has introduced an All In Home Plan which offers 500GB of Unwired broadband data for FJD 99.95. The service also offers bonus access to the Sky Pacific premium package, which includes 25 channels. Subscribers will also receive 40GB for mobile data traffic, including unlimited on-net SMS and voice calls. The package is valid for 30 days.
