Thai PM seeks regulator's support for concession plan

Thailand's prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva is seeking support from the telecommunications regulator on the plan to scrap 2G concession agreements. The prime minister will hold a meeting with the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to discuss the issue around concession agreements as well as 3G licensing. Recently, the council of economic ministers approved the proposal by the finance ministry to terminate mobile concessions held by private operators and to move to a licensing scheme. The ICT and finance ministries will establish a joint committee to finalise the plan within 30 days, ahead of the NTC's plan to auction 3G licences in September. The council of economic ministers also decided that the government should support the regulator's plan to auction 3G licences.
