Tigo-Une activates first 700MHz antennas in Colombia
Colombian operator Tigo-Une (Millicom) has begun deploying its 700MHz network in the country around 4 months after acquiring the corresponding spectrum, reports Telesemana, citing CEO Marcelo Cataldo. The company was awarded 40MHz of spectrum in the 700MHz band last December and has started switching on the first antennas in Bogota, Medellin and Barranquilla.

It intends to bring 4G connectivity using the spectrum to more than 1,630 new locations in the medium term, investing a total of COP 3 billion (around USD 750 million), including spectrum acquisition, in the deployment. Tigo-Une will reach close to 200 localities in the short term, expanding urban mobile coverage to over 95 percent, said Cataldo.

The operator had around 11 million mobile customers and 17 percent of the market at the end of September 2019, behind Claro’s 31 million and Movistar’s 16 million.
