TIM eyeing temporary layoffs for 4,000 staff - report

Thursday 17 May 2018 | 13:55 CET | News

Telecom Italia (TIM) has failed to reach an agreement with trade unions over plans to cut its 50,000-strong domestic workforce and has filed a request at the labour ministry to carry out a temporary layoff scheme as part of its ‘DigiTIM’ 2018-20 business plan. “This project will be analysed and discussed with the trade union organisations with the desirable prospect of swiftly reaching an agreement,” said the company in a statement. The state-sponsored scheme could see up to 4,000 workers stay at home for a certain period as TIM adjusts employment levels to the demands of the market and the company, according to an unnamed source cited by Reuters.

TIM has been holding talks with trade unions over its redundancy plans for several months but suspended negotiations in March. Union sources previously indicated that the company was intending to reduce its workforce by 7,500 via incentivised layoffs and early retirement over the next 3 years. However, the launch of a temporary layoff scheme opens the way to a possible alternative solution, said another unnamed source.
