Toshiba hires outsider as new CEO

Toshiba announced the appointment of Nobuaki Kurumatani as its new CEO and chairman from 01 April. Satoshi Tsunakawa will continue as president and COO and together with Kurumatani lead the management of Toshiba. Both appointments are subject to approval by shareholders at the annual meeting in June.

Toshiba said it was the right time to bring in an outsider like Kurumatani, to lead the transformation of the business following the sale of its memory and nuclear businesses. Kurumatani comes from CVC Asia Pacific Japan where he is president, and he is also a member of Sharp's Audit & Supervisory Committee. Prior to joining CVC in May 2017, he was Deputy President and a Director of Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, where his career was devoted to corporate planning, public relations and internal auditing.

The new CEO will be responsible for strategies for growth in the medium- to long-term and public relations. The President will act as CCO for execution of business operation, Toshiba said.
