Toyota to invest USD 3 bln to create software for autonomous vehicles

Toyota Motor said it will invest nearly USD 3 billion in cooperation with two local automotive components manufacturers to build software for autonomous cars, writes the Wall Street Journal. Together with Denso and Aisin Seiki, Toyota will create a new Tokyo-based company called Toyota Research Institute-Advance Development. The companies said they would invest JPY 300 billion (USD 2.8 billion) in it. The company will start with around 300 employees and will reach around 1,000 staff.

In May 2017, Toyota entered into a deal with Nvidia to use its AI hardware and software technologies to enhance the capabilities of autonomous driving systems planned for market introduction within the next few years. The car manufacturer also partnered KDDI and NTT to advance its self-driving cars technology.
