TPG to offer free data service for 6 months at mobile network launch

Australia's TPG is trying the strategy of Indian operator Reliance Jio and offering customers six months of free service for the launch of its new mobile network. Customers will receive up to 1 GB of data per day at top speeds on the LTE network, after which the speed will be reduced to 1 Mbps for the remainder of the day.

The network is expected to launch in Q3-Q4 2018, TPG said. Customers who choose to continue with the plan after the six-month free period will pay a monthly charge of AUD 9.99.

Those interested in benefiting from the offer will need to register with the company to become initial testers of the network. SIM purchase and product support will be available exclusively via TPG's website during the trial period, from the company's own staff and a customer forum.

Initial mobile network coverage will include CBD areas and numerous surrounding suburbs in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra and Brisbane. TPG will be sending out invitations to persons who express interest, with priority being given to existing TPG, iiNet and Internode broadband customers.
