Redback Networks, Inc., a leading provider of next-generation networking equipment, today announced that Turk Telecom, Turkey's incumbent PTT network provider, has selected Redback® SmartEdge® 800 Service Gateway and its new NetOp(TM) Policy Manager platforms for the rollout of its nationwide broadband network. The installation and support of these products will be handled by Meteksan, Redback's local solutions integration partner in Turkey.
Turk Telecom is deploying Redback's platforms as part of a solution that will enable the company to provide high-quality broadband connectivity and value-added IP services to its broad base of business and consumer customers. Redback's platforms are expected to be deployed in Points of Presence (PoPs) throughout the country's major cities.
"We're very excited to be deploying Redback Networks' products as we will now be able to provide automated, self-provisioned and consistent broadband access and a wide selection of value-added services to our customer base," said Mehmet Toros, vice president of Turk Telecom. "One of the major benefits of Redback technology is that it enables us to scale our broadband subscriber base without having to re-work our existing network infrastructure. This saves us time and money and we expect to see an increase in revenues and a boost in our subscriber numbers."
Launched today (see separate press release "Redback Networks Announces NetOp Policy Manager to Enable Revenue Generating Services Over Broadband Networks"), NetOp Policy Manager is a policy and service management solution for broadband networks based on the proven and commonly deployed RADIUS protocol.
The SmartEdge 800 Service Gateway platform integrates the BRAS strength of Redback's industry-leading SMS(TM) family of subscriber management systems with the SmartEdge platform's purpose-built hardware and software to provide simultaneous and scalable support of subscriber management with dynamic policy enforcement, carrier-class IP routing, ATM mediation, MPLS VPNs, multicast and high performance Quality of Service (QoS). A smaller, lower cost version, the SmartEdge 400, is also available for deployment in more distributed architectures and within smaller PoPs.
"Such early adoption of Redback's SmartEdge Service Gateway and NetOp Policy Manager platforms in Europe reinforces the trend towards more edge-driven IP network services," said Marco Wanders, Redback's vice president of operations for Europe, Middle East & Africa (EMEA). "Service providers such as Turk Telecom want to exploit the revenue opportunities of integrated services such as content filtering, VPNs, and wireless connectivity into their broadband connectivity offerings."
