Turkcell (NYSE:
TKC), (ISE: TCELL), the leading provider of mobile communications in Turkey,
now provides "EDGE" technology that enables faster data transfer and Internet
access for mobile phones. With the increased speed that "Turkcell EDGE"
provides, subscribers are expected to use their mobile handsets more actively
for online communications and for accessing Turkcell's value added services
(logo, picture and tone). Today's launch makes Turkcell the sixth operator to
introduce commercial application of EDGE in Europe.
EDGE (Enhanced Data Rate for GSM Evolution), 3 times faster than GPRS,
offers the advantage of high-speed mobile data and Internet access for both
individual and corporate users. While individual users benefit from the
enhanced entertainment features of mobile devices, corporate users will
easily and effectively access company intranet or other online applications.
It is expected that EDGE will be the most preferred alternative for corporate
users, since it expedites data transfer capabilities that support a company's
remote office platform. Turkcell's GPRSCELL service will also become much
faster with EDGE.
EDGE, available in the United States, is increasingly popular in Europe
and is supported by various handset brands and models. In Turkey, more than
10 different models and approximately one million handsets support EGDE
technology which is likely to rise. Turkcell implements plans to expand the
coverage area for Turkcell EDGE, starting with the zones with higher volumes
of GPRS traffic. Turkcell subscribers with handsets or modem cards supported
by EDGE will benefit from EDGE's faster data transfer through standard
GPRSCELL tariff, without incurring any additional costs, while connecting
online with their notebooks and pocket PCs.
Turkcell also launched "TurkcellConnect" card to be used with notebooks
as a modem. With a "TurkcellConnect" Mobile Modem Card, it will be possible
to transfer data via GPRS, EDGE and WLAN. "TurkcellConnect" card will be
available in all TurkcellExtra stores and Corporate Services Centers.
