U.S. residential broadband customers made 31 percent of all online purchases in 2002, for a total of some $15 billion (EUR 13.54 billion), according to new results from market researchers Scarborough Research. Broadband users spent disproportionately to their overall numbers, Scarborough reports that the number of people who have accessed the Internet via ISDN, DSL or cable modem from their homes in the last 30 days at 19 percent of all Internet users. These users are considerably more likely than narrowband users to have made online purchases in a variety of sectors, many seemingly unrelated to technology. For example, Scarborough reports, broadband users are 39 percent more likely to purchase jewelry online, and 64 percent more likely to purchase toys and games online. Overall, U.S. broadband users are twice as likely as other Internet users to have spent more than $2,500 online in the past 12 months.
