UK govt gives extra GBP 250 mln for faster broadband
The UK government has announced extra funds of GBP 250 million for faster broadband in some of the UK's hardest-to-reach rural areas. This funding is in addition to the GBP 1.2 billion already invested by central and local government. The spending is expected to ensure 95 percent of UK homes and businesses have access to "superfast" broadband by 2017. This extra funding for local projects will help business start-ups and job creation and will include an extra GBP 12 million of government money for broadband in Wales. The fund will open on 17 March.

Rural education damaged by lack of broadband access

A survey by insurance provider NFU Mutual shows that the education of children in rural families is being damaged by a lack of suitable broadband access, reports BBC News. The survey suggests that 1 in 5 rural families have poor broadband connections, preventing their children from accessing educational resources online. More than one third of those with internet access said their broadband connection was too slow for their needs.

PAC wants govt to delay extra BT broadband funds

The Commons Public Accounts Committee has called for BT not to be given any more taxpayers' money for rural broadband projects until it explains how it is using the GBP 1.2 billion it has already received, reports BBC News. BT has to date won all the rural broadband contracts across the UK, with a government audit of how much it charged councils for project managements have shown potential savings of up to 35 percent.
