UK PSBs plan new catch-up service for smart TVs - report
UK public service broadcasters BBC, ITV and Channel 4 are leading a project to make catch-up services available as standard on smart TVs under the 'Freeview Connect' brand, reports The Guardian. The move is in response to the YouView broadband TV platform being hijacked by partners BT and TalkTalk to develop their pay-TV services. The PSBs have joined forces to develop a new service to make their respective catch-up TV services available on smart TVs as standard. Freeview Connect is being pushed by Digital UK, the industry body funded by BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Arqiva to guarantee the universal availability of public service TV.

YouView confirms new shareholder funding agreement

UK internet TV platform YouView has confirmed that all seven existing shareholders have agreed to guarantee funding for at least another five years. The new agreement retains BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, BT, TalkTalk and Arqiva as equal shareholders. YouView has passed more than one million connected UK homes in less than 18 months since launch. It registers more than 3 million VoD plays a week, or 500,000 plays a day. Over half of YouView customers are viewing four 30-minute VoD TV programmes each week.

BBC launches new version of iPlayer

The BBC has launched a new version of iPlayer for computers, tablets, mobiles and connected TVs. This follows extensive research and user testing. It is rolling out a new web version of BBC iPlayer (accessible via bbc.co.uk/iplayer on computers, tablets and smart phones) and a new TV version (accessible via the existing BBC iPlayer app on a range of connected TV devices). The BBC iPlayer mobile and tablet apps will be updated with the new interface in the coming months.

Freeview, partners consider connected catch-up TV service

UK DTT operator Freeview and partners are considering a connected catch-up TV service, reports Broadband TV News. Speaking at a Westminster Media Forum in London, managing director Ilse Howling was unable to provide any further details at this stage. She said that almost 20 million homes have and watch Freeview, and 40 percent of homes only have Freeview.

BBC confirms plans to close BBC Three as broadcast channel

The BBC has confirmed plans to close BBC Three as a broadcast TV channel in autumn 2015, subject to BBC Trust approval. This will help the corporation save over GBP 50 million a year, with GBP 30 million of this being invested in drama on BBC One. BBC Three will be reinvented as an online channel and on iPlayer, with the freed-up spectrum to be used to extend CBBC by an hour a night and to provide a BBC One +1 service.

BT adds more HDTV channels to YouView service

BT has added Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, British Eurosport and British Eurosport 2 to its HDTV offering. The BT TV platform now offers up to 26 HD channels through the YouView service. The new HD channels will be available as part of BT's HD Extra bolt on, which costs GBP 3 per month.

TalkTalk signs 2-year recruitment deal with Futurestep

UK telecoms company TalkTalk has signed a 2-year recruitment processing partnership with Futurestep. The recruitment company will be responsible for identifying internal and external candidates that possess critical key attributes for TalkTalk. The contract, which is valid from March, will be a hybrid model covering both contracted and permanent personnel and will focus on hiring for TalkTalk's sites in Warrington, Irlam and London.

UK telecoms company TalkTalk has added the Nicktoons channel to the TalkTalk TV service. This will allow YouView from TalkTalk customers to watch cartoons including SpongeBob SquarePants, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Sanjay & Craig, T.U.F.F. Puppy and others. ITV CEO rules out bid for Channel 5

UK commercial broadcaster ITV has ruled out making a bid for Channel 5 after a stronger advertising market helped the company beat analysts' expectations in 2013, reports the Financial Times. First-round bids for Richard Desmond's Channel 5 are due on 27 February. Speaking at a presentation of its results, ITV CEO Adam Crozier said that it 'was not looking' at Channel 5.

ITV to launch new ITVBe channel for younger, females

UK broadcaster ITV is expanding its portfolio of free-to-air channels with the new ITVBe channel. This will target a younger, female audience with lifestyle and reality programming from the UK and the US. The ITVBe channel will launch towards end-2014 and will be wholly funded by advertising and sponsorship.
