Umniah announces tie-up with Skype

Jordanian operator Umniah and Skype have announced a partnership to provide Umniah subscribers with benefits based on its 3.75G technology. Umniah customers will be offered extra capacity, on top of their current data plans, to make more free Skype to Skype voice and video calls to any Skype user in Jordan and around the world, without consuming their voice allowances. The offer will be available to smartphone owners at no extra charge, with several existing data plans. Umniah CEO Ihab Hinnawi said operators need to partner more with app providers to meet customer demand for VoIP and other data services and help limit the drop in revenues. 

All other Evo subscribers will be able to enjoy Skype using their current data plan allowances. Besides free Skype voice and video calls, Umniah customers will enjoy easy accessibility to other popular Skype features such as instant messaging and low cost calls to landlines and mobiles.

Jordan's mobile phone penetration is forecast to reach 200 percent, after it reached 140 percent by the end of 2012, Arab Advisers Group told the Jordan Times. Istikana inks deal with Umniah in Jordan

On-demand video streaming service Istikana has announced a partnership with Jordanian operator Umniah. The deal will allow Umniah 3G subscribers to access Istikana's online trove of Arabic videos by visiting fun.umniah.com. Thanks to a deal with Arab Radio & Television, one of the region's biggest archives of film content, the VOD platform now boasts over 4,000 hours in total. This marks Istikana's first deal with a telecom company. The service is also available through an app on Samsung Smart TVs.

Only 22% of Jordanian mobile phone owners go online

The number of mobile internet users in Jordan is still relatively low but is likely to rise rapidly in the coming years as competition grows, Jordan Times reported, citing a survey by Pew Research Centre. It found that around 94 per cent of Jordanians own mobile phones, but a minority uses them for internet access. The report indicated that 96 percent of mobile phone owners use them to make calls, 68 percent to send text messages, 47 percent to take pictures and videos, and only 22 per cent to use the inter
