
UNE EPM wins 2.5 GHz spectrum tender

Colombian operator UNE EPM Telecomunicaciones has won the tender for mobile spectrum in the 2,500-2,690 MHz frequency band. The new spectrum is being released to improve the provision of mobile internet and data services, mobile banking, tourism and logistics location-based services. UNE EPM will use 4G technology to provide mobile voice and mobile internet services, competing with Comcel, Movistar and Tigo. UNE plans to deploy LTE technology to offer 4G services, local newspaper Portafolio reports, citing Christian Toro, UNE financial VP. UNE will pay COP 8 bln for each of the 10 spectrum blocks of 5 MHz it has won. The license is valid for ten years and can be expanded by an additional period of ten years. UNE plans to invest around COP 150 billion in the new project and launch mobile services in the first half of 2011.
