German cable operator Unitymedia announced plans to introduce a new top broadband speed of 400 Mbps, double its current maximum speed. From February, around 40 percent of the 12.7 million homes passed by its network in North Rhine-Westphalia, Hessen and Baden-Wurttemberg will be able to receive the faster service. In Frankfurt, 245,000 out of 410,000 Unitymedia cable households will be able to connect to the new speeds at the launch.
From 1 February, the operator launches the new tariff “Max 400” for residential customers as an internet-only product or in combination with telephony and television. The plan starts at EUR 69.99 per month, with a EUR 10 per month discount the first nine months of a 24-month contract. Business customers in many regions of the distribution area will be able to add the speed boost to the tariffs ”Office Internet 200“ and “Office Internet & Phone 200“.
Unitymedia said the speed upgrade comes as it's also preparing the roll-out of Docsis 3.1 on its network. This year it will also work on expanding its public Wi-Fi network, which already counts over 1,000 access points in 100 cities.
