UPC to launch broadband at 500Mbps this year
Cable operator UPC is currently testing broadband services at up to 500Mbps. A commercial launch in the Netherlands is expected this year, said Mike Fries, CEO of parent company Liberty Global, on a conference call over Q1 results. Sister company Cablecom in Switzerland will also offer the 500Mbps service. UPC Netherlands recently increased its top speed to 200Mbps, in response to growing competition from FTTH services. Incumbent KPN offers a top speed of 80 Mbps over DSL and 500 Mbps over fibre.

UPC Netherlands reported a drop in customer numbers in the second quarter due to the difficult competitive environment. It lost a net 6,700 revenue-generating units in the quarter, for a total 3.676 million at end-June. Customers totaled 1.674 million, down by 24,700 since March. UPC Cablecom boosts available HD channels to 48

Swiss cable network operator UPC Cablecom will broadcast RTL Group channels in HD from 19 June. These include RTL, RTL II, VOX and SUPER RTL channels in HD across German-speaking Switzerland. This will increase the total number of HD channels offered by UPC Cablecom to 48.

UPC Cablecom completes Schwyz network upgrade

Swiss cable network operator UPC Cablecom has upgraded its network in the Canton of Schwyz. The fibre network upgrade provides 15,500 households with super-fast broadband access at up to 150 Mbps. The Schwyz network upgrade lasted two years and cost more than CHF 10 million.

UPC Cablecom completes Zurich fibre network roll-out

Swiss cable network operator UPC Cablecom has completed the roll-out of fibre-optic network in the Truellikon district of Zurich, completing the roll-out of the fibre network across the Zurich metropolitan area. As a result, 500,000 households in the city now have access to super-fast broadband speeds of up to 150 Mbps. The construction of the network took around five years and cost more than CHF 400 million, with UPC Cablecom laying more than 1,700 km of fibre-optic cable.

UPC Poland offers broadband at 250 Mbps

Cable operator UPC Poland has introduced Fibre Power broadband service at up to 250 Mbps. Its previous top speed was 150Mbps for consumers and 180Mbps for businesses. The monthly subscription to the 250Mbps service costs PLN 100 for the first three months under a promotion, and the regular rate is PLN 200 per month. The service comes with upload speeds of up to 20 Mbps, access for up to five computers and three e-mail accounts with each 5 GB.

UPC Cablecom adds 21,600 new internet subscribers in Q1

Swiss cable network operator UPC Cablecom added 21,600 new internet subscribers in Q1 2013. Revenue was up 5.1 percent to CHF 303.3 million in the first quarter, with more than 55,000 Swiss homes now using the Horizon multimedia platform launched in January. At end-March, UPC Cablecom had a total of 626,800 fibre-optic cable internet and more than 1.43 million digital TV connections.

UPC Netherlands Q1 revenues stable on lower margins

UPC Netherlands reported first-quarter revenues at EUR 238 million, up 0.6 percent from the year before. When excluding the acquisition of Regiokabel, revenues lifted 0.5 percent. EBITDA reached EUR 140 million, up 0.5 percent, while the EBITDA margin fell 0.1 point to 58.7 percent. Capex was at EUR 43 million (+14%). UPC Netherlands raises top broadband speed to 200Mbps

UPC Netherlands has confirmed an increase in its broadband speeds from 03 April. Its triple-play 'Alles-in-Een' packages will have a top speed of 200Mbps download and 20Mbps upload for the most expensive Extreme Power plan at EUR 89.50 per month.
