US ISPs present principles for protecting consumer privacy

Verizon and a number of ISPs have released a comprehensive set of self-regulating principles for protecting the privacy of customers online,  regardless of the status of the FCC’s broadband privacy rules. Vodafone said the principles are largely based on FTC guidelines for consumer protection, and cover issues such as transparency, security and easy to understand choices, as well as data security and data breach notifications.

Committed parties include Altice USA, American Cable Association, AT&T, Charter Communications, Citizens Telephone and Cablevision, Comcast, Cox Communications, CTIA, Dickey Rural Networks, Inland Telephone Company d/b/a Inland Networks, ITTA (association for mid-sized communications companies), internet and TV association NCTA, Northeast Louisiana Telephone (NortheastTel), rural broadband association NTCA, SCTelcom, T-Mobile Netherlands, USTelecom, Verizon, VTX1 Companies, Wheat State Telephone, Wireless Internet Service Providers Association, and advocates for rural broadband WTA.

Vodafone said that regardless of the legal status of the FCC’s broadband privacy rules, it remains committed to protecting the privacy of its customer and of their data. Vodafone said it believes the approach will meet customer privacy expectations and looks forward to working with the FCC and other policymakers to ensure a consistent, and effective, approach to protecting consumer privacy online.
