US OTT subscribers up 868,000 to 6.7 million in Q2

The number of US subscribers to a Virtual Multichannel Video Programming Distributor (vMVPD) service surged by 868,000 in the second quarter of 2018 to reach 6.73 million, up some 119 percent year on year, according to the latest study from Strategy Analytics. In comparison, legacy pay TV providers, including cable, satellite and IPTV, lost nearly as many subscribers (-973,000) in the second quarter as the prior two quarters combined (-1.16 million). In Q2 2018, total legacy pay TV subscriptions fell to 87.05 million, down 3.6 percent year on year, said the report.
