Venezuela, China ink deal to build 'Guaicaipuro' satellite

The Venezuelan government has announced a deal with China to build and launch what will be the country’s fourth satellite. The agreement was revealed after Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro returned to Caracas from a four-day visit to the Asian country. No specific launch date was given for the telecommunications satellite but the government said it will be called “Guaicaipuro” after a 16th century Venezuelan indigenous leader.

China has previously helped Venezuela develop and launch its Bolivar, Miranda and Sucre satellites, the latter at the end of last year under the Latin American country’s 2014 deal with China’s Great Wall Industry Corporation (CGWIC).
