Verizon files appeal against net neutrality rules
Verizon Communications filed an appeal in federal court in Washington, DC against the 'net neutrality' rules set by the FCC. The rules are set to come into effect on 20 November and have long been opposed by Verizon. Similar to a number of Republican members of Congress, Verizon claims that the FCC went beyond its authority and does not have the power to impose such "sweeping and unneeded regulations". The rules set a number of requirements for fixed and mobile internet providers, prohibiting any block or discrimination against certain data services, while allowing for a limited amount of network traffic management. An earlier lawsuit brought by Verizon against the rules was rejected as premature.
