Vietnam mobile operator Viettel has launched its Metfone mobile service in Cambodia. Metfone has more than 1,000 base stations supported by a 5,000-km fibre-optic network linking all provinces of the country. Metfone charges calls per second and offers packages and value-added services. Metfone attracted 500,000 subscribers in its first three months of trial service. Metfone plans to sponsor free internet for 1,000 schools, worth an estimated USD 5 million over five years. In 2009, Metfone will expand its coverage by deploying 3,000 base stations and a 10,000-km fibre network.
