Virgin Mobile launches MVNO in Mexico

Virgin Mobile has launched operations in Mexico, El Universal reports. Virgin Mobile Mexico will initially target the young customer segment, including users aged 15 to 34. The MVNO will offer prepay services, with per-second billing. Virgin Mobile will provide its MVNO service in Mexico using the Movistar network. Virgin Mobile signed an agreement to purchase network capacity from Telefonica Mexico in November 2013.

Virgin received a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) licence from Mexican telecoms regulator SCT in 2011. Mexico has over 103 million mobile telephony users.

Virgin Mobile currently provides MNVO services in the UK, US, Canada, Chile, Colombia, South Africa, France, India and Australia.

Virgin Mobile has launched MVNO operations in the city of Chihuahua, in Mexico. The operator also aims to launch operations in Ciudad Juarez. Maz Tiempo to kick off MVNO in Mexico on 21 August

Mexican MVNO Maz Tiempo expects to launch its commercial operation on 21 August, Signals reports. The company has already launched an advertising campaign in Mexico City, according to the report. Mexican telecommunications firm Ekofon has also recently announced that it expects to launch a MVNO operation next month under the Cierto brand. Other MVNOs in Mexico includes Virgin Mobile and Tuenti.

Virgin Mobile expects to reach 300,000 subscribers in Chile by the end of this year, TeleSemana reports, citing Virgin Mobile Chile CEO, Juan Antonio Etcheverry. Latin American MVNO Virgin Mobile Latin America has closed a new USD 86 million equity capital funding round supported by an expanded debt facility of USD 41.5 million to include the new Mexican operation. Virgin Mobile Latin America has launched a search for a community manager ('SocialStar') in Mexico. Virgin Mobile plans to soon launch mobile services in Mexico. Virgin will use the Movistar network to provide MVNO services in Mexico. Interested parties can register at the virginmobile.mx website and share a 40-second video explaining why they want to be Virgin Mobile's SocialStar. The public will select the video they like most by 13 May. The winner will be announced on 16 May.

Due to recent changes in telecommunications legislation and given the increase in demand for mobile services, Mexico could soon get its first MVNOs, reports El Siglo de Correon. Coppel and Virgin Mobile Latin America have expressed an interest in investing in the country as MVNOs. In the case of the latter, it foresees that it will enter the market in the second quarter, targeting an audience aged 15 to 30 years.

According to a Telefonica Mexico statement, Virgin Mobile has already started to expand its business structure in Mexico with a focus on sales, marketing and customer service.
