Vodafone Germany conducts live LTE Broadcast tests
Vodafone Germany is the first carrier in Europe to conduct live tests with LTE Broadcast in co-operation with Ericsson, Qualcomm Technologies and Samsung. The trial took place at Borussia Moenchengladbach's stadium on 22 February. Also known as evolved Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (eMBMS), LTE Broadcast enables smartphone users in device-dense locations to watch TV channels in high-quality. It uses Single Frequency Network technology to distribute the signal to an unlimited number of recipients. The user only needs a LTE-enabled device with a LTE Broadcast app. LTE Broadcast could soon be available in other stadiums across Germany as part of Vodafone's network upgrade programme.

Vodafone Germany rolls out mobile payments in Berlin

Vodafone Germany is looking to increase mobile payments using smartphones in Berlin, dpa reports. It has installed several hundred payment terminals in coffee shops, cafes and pharmacies across the city. It is working with Visa to roll out the NFC-based Vodafone SmartPass service. Vodafone Germany and market research company GfK have joined forces to analyse the mobile internet and app use of German consumers. The project has been approved by the relevant data protection authorities. The research will analyse data from members of the GfK Panel and selected Vodafone customers who have given permission for their anonymised data to be used.

Vodafone Germany starts upgrading network in Berlin

Vodafone Germany is upgrading its network as part of its nationwide network upgrade programme. Over the next few weeks, engineers will upgrade hardware and software in more than 500 sites across the city. This will provide customers with faster data speeds, improved network quality and fewer dropped calls when the work is completed in June.

Vodafone Germany rolls out SmartPass nationwide

Vodafone Germany announced at CeBIT that the SmartPass and Vodafone Wallet services are now available nationwide. SmartPass allows users of more than 10 NFC-enabled smartphone models to pay at around 36,500 outlets across Germany. To use SmartPass, customers need to download and install the Vodafone Wallet app on their smartphone. They can then register for SmartPass direct through Vodafone Wallet.

Vodafone Germany upgrades mobile network in Hamburg

Vodafone Germany is upgrading its mobile network in the city of Hamburg. Engineers are working to upgrade hardware and software at more than 300 sites, with the upgrade scheduled for completion in April. Vodafone Germany develops LTE Wi-Fi stick for cars

Vodafone Germany has developed a new LTE Wi-Fi stick for cars as part its connected vehicle strategy. It is launching a field test with selected drivers of Taxi Berlin. The LTE stick creates an in-vehicle WLAN for mobile internet access, and can support up to 10 connected devices simultaneously. The device is charged through the cigarette lighter fitting in the vehicle, but also comes with an adapter for charging through domestic plug sockets. Vodafone Germany to present new phones, tablets at CeBIT

Vodafone Germany will launch new business phones, tablets and routers at CeBIT, including LTE CAT4 devices. It will offer the new Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphone in black and white from start-April for EUR 1 with the Vodafone Red L smartphone tariff, or EUR 49.90 with the Red M plan. New technology means mobile networks are ever increasing in speed. In the Netherlands, the top speeds are currently 42 Mbps over 3G and 50 Mbps over 4G. In countries such as South Korea, operators are deploying carrier aggregation (using two or more frequency bands at the same time) to achieve speeds of 150, 225, 300 Mbps and more.
