Vodafone Ghana acquires 800 MHz band spectrum for USD 30 mln

Ghana's National Communications Authority announced the award of 2x5MHz to Vodafone Ghana in the 800 MHz band for USD 30 million. This means the operator will be able to launch its own 4G mobile services.

The award is the result of a process begun in September when the NCA called for applications for three lots of spectrum in the band. Two companies submitted applications, and Vodafone was the only successful applicant following financial negotiations.  

MTN already acquired 2x10MHz in the band in December 2015, and the NCA divided the remaining spectrum into two 2x5MHz slots plus an additional 2x5MHz harvested from the digital migration. MTN and others who already have slots in the 800MHz band were excluded from the auction.

CEO Selorm Adadevoh said although the NCA is yet to officially invite other interested companies to purchase the remaining spectrum, it is open to securing it when the offer is eventually made.

Vodafone Ghana rolls out 4G service

Vodafone Ghana has officially launched its 4G service, after acquiring spectrum in the 800MHz band in December 2018. Vodafone's 4G service comes as standard on post-paid and pay-as-you-go offerings. Customers can test the compatibility of their phones on 4G by dialling *700*#6 option on their handsets. Vodafone offers a free Sim swap for customers to access 4G.

Vodafone Ghana introduces 4G on 19 March

Vodafone Ghana says it has finalised plans to launch its 4G network service on 19 March in major cities. CEO Yolanda Cuba said the technical team has been able to fast-track the process for an early launch of the 4G service, instead of later in the year 2019.

Vodafone Ghana has introduced eight bundles to replace its long list of integrated bundles. They are called Red 1, Red 2, Red 5, Red 10, Red 20, Red 25, Red 50 and Red 100. They offer call minutes to Vodafone numbers, calls to other networks, and international destinations, as well as SMS and data.

Vodafone Ghana, in partnership with Facebook, has launched the Express Wi-Fi programme to deliver connectivity to under-served areas across the country.  Express Wi-Fi enables retail entrepreneurs to offer internet service at hotspots in their communities. It is deployed in countries including India, Kenya, Indonesia, Nigeria and Tanzania.

Vodafone Ghana urged to list on GSE after acquiring 4G spectrum

Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) managers are working with the Ministry of Communications to compel Vodafone to float part of its shares on the bourse as a requirement after it purchased 4G spectrum, Ghananews reported. GSE CEO Kofi Yamoah argued that such a move would strengthen Vodafone's operations in the country. He was of the view that compelling Vodafone to list will provide Ghanaians an opportunity to own part of a company that was originally Ghanaian.

Ghanaian mobile network operators challenge NCA fine

Ghana's mobile network operators (MNOs) have refused to pay the GHS 34.06 million in fine imposed by the National Communications Authority (NCA) for various infractions in their licence conditions, Daily Graphic reported, citing sources. They have challenged the basis of the fine and presented their petition to the Electronic Communications Tribunal for redress.

Vodafone Ghana opens shop in Kumasi City Mall

Vodafone Ghana has opened a new retail shop at the Kumasi City Mall, in the Ashanti Region. CEO Yolanda Cuba said Vodafone would continue to work for the satisfaction and convenience of its customer. The director in charge of consumer business, Puspinder Singh, said the shop would completely change the dynamics of customer service at the centre.

Vodafone Ghana to deliver 4G services in three months

Vodafone Ghana is realigning its operation to begin the deployment of 4G to its customers in April. It is expected to spend about USD 90 million to fully deploy LTE after the National Communication Authority gave it the green light in December. Ebenezer Amankwah, corporate relations manager of Vodafone Ghana told Starr Business that it is looking at full deployment by the second quarter of this yearl.

Ghana invites applications for spectrum in 800 MHz band

Ghana's National Communications Authority (NCA) has released a roadmap for the sale of the remaining spectrum in the 800MHz band. The NCA is inviting applicants to vie for the available slots in an auction slated for a later date. The deadline for the submission of applications is 08 October, and the process is expected to finish by 23 December.
