Vodafone India, Idea Cellular in merger talks - report
India's second- and third-largest mobile operators, Vodafone and Idea Cellular are in "exploratory" talks for a possible merger, unnamed sources told CNBC-TV18. However, a possible merger could infringe anti-trust regulations, as the combined entity would breach the 50 percent market share in a few circles.

Idea rejected the report in a statement to the stock market, saying it was "absolutely untrue and preposterous". Vodafone India declined to comment on the matter.

Indus Tower eyes acquisitions in India to boost expansion

Indian telecom tower company Indus Towers is open to acquisitions in India. The company ended 2015 with nearly 120,000 towers. Indus Towers plans to focus on India rather than overseas for expansion as mobile operators will continue to need more towers as they aggressively launch 4G services. The focus for acquisitions for the 3-way joint venture between Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular will, however, be limited to towers where the growth has been continuous and core to its operations, ET reports, citing

Vodafone, RCom talk 3G spectrum sharing - report

Vodafone India and Indian mobile operator Reliance Communications (RCom) are in initial talks to share 3G spectrum in the Delhi and Mumbai circles. Vodafone and RCom have 5 MHz of 2100 MHz (3G) spectrum each in both circles and "sharing will be a win-win for both", The Economic Times reports, citing an unnamed person familiar with the matter. "Talks are on and may even be concluded within three-four weeks", the person added.

Infratel to acquire Idea, Vodafone towers - report

Bharti Infratel, the telecom tower business unit of Indian operator Bharti Airtel, is in advanced talks with Vodafone and Idea Cellular to buy out their telecom towers for up to USD 1.6 billion, The Economic Times reports, citing unnamed banking sources. According to the same sources, Vodafone plans to sell 11,000-12,000 towers while Idea Cellular intends to sell 9,000 towers to Bharti Infratel.

Idea Cellular launches 3G services on 900 MHz spectrum

Indian operator Idea Cellular has launched 3G services on its own network using the 900 MHz spectrum in the Delhi circle. The operator has around 6 million subscribers in Delhi, of which 30 percent are mobile data users. Up to now, Idea has provided 3G services in these metro circles via roaming agreements with Airtel and Vodafone India. The latest launch expands Idea's own 3G network to 12 major markets in India, while it also provides 3G via roaming in another nine regions.
