Vodafone India leads in December net adds
India ended December 2013 with 694.83 million GSM mobile subscribers, up by 6.80 million in the month. Vodafone India led in net adds, reporting 2.37 million new customers to bring its total to 160.41. Vodafone was followed by Bharti Airtel with 1.81 million net adds, ending the month with 198.41 million customers. Aircel gained 1.63 million subscribers, bringing its total to 66.91 million, and Telewings reported 410,827 net adds for the month, ending December with a total of 32.78 million subscribers. Videocon signed-up 299,169 new customers to bring its total to 3.97 million while Idea Cellular attracted 271,171 new subscribers, ending the month with 128.69 million. State-owned operator MTNL reported net adds of 10,907 and a total customer base of 3.46 million in December, while BSNL and Loop Telecom did not report any net adds for December. BSNL serves 97.17 million GSM subscribers and Loop Telecom has 3.03 million subscribers.

CBI dismisses settlement plea by Loop Telecom

A special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court has dismissed a petition by Indian mobile operator Loop Telecom for a settlement. Loop Telecom had asked the court to refer the case to Lok Adalat to work out a settlement in the 2G case. However, the court said that were no chances of settlement in the case and that CBI opposes a settlement, PTI reports. India-based mobile marketing provider Flytxt has partnered with local mobile operator Idea Cellular to deploy a mobile advertising platform, QREDA. Through the service, brands can connect to Flytxt's mobile advertising market place mADmart and allow them to engage with Idea Cellular's 130 million subscribers, PTI reports.

Videocon in talks with potential partners

Indian mobile operator Videocon Telecom is in talks with potential partners to grow its business. "Like any growing organisation, we too seek partnerships and investments to grow our business, and there is interest shown by others for partnering and investment," the Economic Times quotes chief executive Arvind Bali as saying. Videocon did not participate in the recent spectrum auction but Bali is upbeat. According to him, the company's operations in its seven operating circles and ILD business are growing.

Airtel expands in Mumbai with Loop Mobile takeover

Bharti Airtel has agreed to buy its smaller rival Loop Mobile's activities in Mumbai. The deal nearly doubles Airtel's base in Mumbai, adding Loop's 3 million customers to Airtel's 4 million in the city. Loop also brings 2,500 2G/Edge cell sites, boosting coverage for Airtel, which has over 4,000 2G/3G sites in Mumbai. Bharti launches LTE services in Bangalore

Indian mobile operator Bharti Airtel has launched LTE services for Apple iPhone 5s and 5c 3G data users. The service is offered in Bangalore at no extra charge, but customers will need to change their Sim to a 4G Sim card. For heavy data users, Bharti has also introduced a new 4G plan with 10 GB of 4G data priced at INR 1,000. The company said that voice calls will be routed to 2G or 3G.

BSNL begins exchange upgrade with Huawei

Indian state-owned telecommunications provider Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) is set to upgrade its telephone exchanges in major cities to IP-based next generation networks. The company, which is using equipment from Chinese telecommunications equipment vendor Huawei, expects the complete phase one of the modernisation project in March this year, PTI reports citing BSNL chairman and managing director R. MTNL moves to net profit in Q3

Indian state-run operator MTNL posted a net profit for the fiscal third quarter of INR 4.28 billion versus a net loss of INR 11.82 billion in the year-ago period. For the quarter ended 31 December, income from operations grew to INR 8.53 billion from INR 8.35 billion a year earlier. Basic and other services revenues inched up to INR 6.70 billion from INR 6.69 billion, while mobile revenues grew to INR 1.91 billion from INR 1.73 billion for the third quarter a year earlier.

Vodafone India posts underlying sales growth of 13.2%

Vodafone reported organic service revenue growth of 13.2 percent for its Indian activities in the fiscal third quarter to December, driven by a bigger customer base, improved voice pricing and strong data growth. Reported revenues were still down 2.0 percent from a year earlier to GBP 937 million due to the weaker rupee. Airtel quarterly revenues up 13%, profit more than doubles

Bharti Airtel reported fourth-quarter revenues up 13 percent from a year earlier to INR 219.4 billion. EBITDA rose 23 percent to INR 70.9 billion, and net profit more than doubled, to INR 6.1 billion from INR 2.8 billion a year ago. Idea's Q3 profit, revenues grow

Indian mobile operator Idea Cellular posted a profit of INR 4.68 billion in the third quarter ended 31 December 2013, up from INR 2.29 billion a year earlier. Indian mobile services provider Aircel has launched an international calling plan: Aircel ISD 54444. The prefix-based calling plan offers INR 0.01 per second calls to select destinations including USA, Canada, Singapore, China, and the UK. Videocon deploys Wi-Fi hotspots in Punjab

Indian mobile operator Videocon Telecom has rolled out a Wi-Fi service in the Punjab telecommunications circle and plans to expand it to other circles as well. Vodafone India to triple fixed-line base

Vodafone India expects its fixed-line customer base to triple this year, similar to the last financial year.
