Vodafone India tells govt to reconsider licence renewal
Vodafone India has called for the Indian government to reconsider its decision to not renew the mobile operator's licences expiring in 2014. The telecommunication department (DoT) earlier denied Vodafone's request for extension of licences in Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata for ten years, saying the operator must adhere to the new policy of spectrum rights separate from operating licences and apply for new spectrum licences at market prices. In a letter to the DoT, Vodafone said the new policy cannot be applied retroactively to its existing licences. The operator said the Supreme Court rulings canceling 900MHz licences do not cover Vodafone's permits, and the company is still waiting for a detailed proposal from the government in order to negotiate its own continuation of business and licences.
