Vodafone NL services still disrupted after fire

Thursday 5 April 2012 | 09:51 CET | News
Vodafone Netherlands has managed to restore 2G and 3G services to around half the customers affected by a major fire at its network centre in Rotterdam. The mobile operator said restoring services was taking longer than expected, as it must manually connect emergency facilities to the GSM radio network, while 3G traffic is routed through other locations. The fire in the early hours of 04 April meant that around a quarter of its 5.3 million customers in the Netherlands could not make calls, send SMS or use mobile internet. I live and work in the Netherlands and depend on my cell phone for my personal life and my business life. This whole thing has been incredibly annoying. I have a basic cell phone (no 3g stuff) and still my cell phone service is not up and running after almost a week. My patience has run out. I don't care how bad of an accident there was in Rotterdam, I'm dumping vodafone as my provider tomorrow. You just can't run a business so poorly these days and expect to get away with it. I don't just mean the service interruption caused by the fire, or the shocking revelation that there was apparently no backup system in place. There are also no news updates or special info on the company's Dutch website regarding the outages. In fact (and this a problem across the Netherlands) I can't even navigate the page sufficiently to Email someone about my problem (since I have not phone), because in addition to NO CELL SERVICE and NO NEWS UPDATES, they also have NO ENGLISH LANGUAGE website. Vodafone has an English Language Summary page with some basic info in English, but nothing close to the full range of options available in Dutch.
