Vodafone, Sky NZ abandon merger plans
Vodafone New Zealand and Sky Network Television have decided to abandon their planned merger. The companies first announced the plans over a year ago, but were unable to secure regulatory clearance for the deal due to fears of reduced competition from merging the broadband and pay-TV providers. Sky said in a short statement that the companies decided to withdraw their appeal against the Commerce Commission's decision. Vodafone and Sky will continue to see out opportunities for commercial partnership.

Regulator OKs Infratil's acquisition of Vodafone New Zealand stake

New Zealand's Commerce Commission has granted clearance for Infratil to acquire up to 50 percent of the shares in Vodafone New Zealand. Vodafone Group has agreed to sell its Vodafone New Zealand unit to a consortium of investors, which includes New Zealand-based Infratil and Canada-based Brookfield Asset Management. The consortium has agreed to acquire Vodafone New Zealand for NZD 3.4 billion cash (approximately EUR 2.1 billion).

Vodafone Group is considering selling towers in order to help reduce debt and maintain dividends, its incoming CEO Nick Read said. Vodafone launches TV service in New Zealand

Vodafone has launched the Vodafone TV service in New Zealand. Customers who take up the operator's offering will have access to Sky TV, free-to-air and a range of online and app-based entertainment services such as Netflix in one intuitive system. Vodafone TV enables viewers to switch between their smartphone, tablet and TV set. With some of the content, viewers will be able to stop what they are watching on TV, pick it up on their smartphone, and continue watching after they have left the house.

Vodafone New Zealand offers free access to Sky Sport content

Vodafone New Zealand has launched a special Sky Sport package. New and existing customers who sign up to Vodafone Unlimited Broadband and home phone, and Sky Basic for 12 months will receive free access to Sky Sport for one year. The offer will run for a year from the date their new broadband plan is activated, providing customers with access to Sky's range of sporting coverage.

The Commerce Commission has declined to grant clearance for the proposed merger of Sky Network Television and Vodafone New Zealand. The Commission says its assessment focused on the impact of the proposed merger on competition in both the broadband and mobile telecommunications markets.
