Vumatel to invest ZAR 3 bln in fibre-to-the-home
South Africa's Vumatel will invest SAR 3 billion in fibre networks in the next two to three years, which will see many areas in Cape Town getting fibre-to-the-home services. Vumatel CEO Niel Schoeman told MyBroadband that they have already passed 33,000 homes with their FTTH service, and plan to grow this number to over 100,000 in 2016. Schoeman said they have started their construction in Tamboerksloof and Gardens in Cape Town. The areas which will get Vumatel fibre access in 2016 include: Tamboerskloof; Gardens; Oranjezicht; Higgovale; Vredehoek; and Devil's Peak

Vumatel acquires Fibrehoods

South Africa's Vumatel has acquired Fibrehoods, with the terms of the deal not disclosed, reports Mybroadband. Niel Schoeman, CEO of Vumatel said it plans to complete its fibre infrastructure roll-out across Johannesburg by Q3 2017. The Fibrehoods network compliments Vumatel's network footprint with little overlap. Through Fibrehoods, the firm said it gains more capability to expand into new suburbs quicker, noting that there are also ancillary benefits that they gain from economies of scale.

Vumatel connects first home in Cape Town's Tamboerskloof

Vumatel has gone live in Cape Town, said MyBroadband, bringing 1 Gbps fibre to Tamboerskloof. The service is endorsed by the Tamboerskloof community, represented by TBK Watch. Vumatel started rolling out its network in May and connected the first home this week, said MyBroadband, without specifying which week.

Telkom ramps up fibre footprint with Vumatel

South African operator Telkom's Retail and Consumer division announced that it will be leveraging open access fibre from network provider Vumatel to complement its own fibre network footprint and reach more consumers in South Africa. Through Telkom's wholesale network provider, Openserve, Telkom already claims the most extensive fibre network in the country with access to over 81 000 homes passed.
