VW to launch self-driving MicroBus with Nvidia AI

Nvidia will help Volkswagen put out its new ID Buzz, the reimagining of the VW MicroBus in electric car form and equipped with AI for the cockpit, self-driving and safety. The two companies made the announced at the kickoff of CES 2018. Nvidia will provide its Drive IX platform, its Intelligent Experience platform software development kit. The platform will enable the creation of AI-enabled applications such as facial recognition for automatically unlocking and opening the vehicle, surround perception to alert drivers to potential hazards, gesture recognition for user controls, natural language understanding for flawless voice control, and gaze tracking for driver distraction alerts.

The ID Buzz will be the first to launch from VW’s ID family and its electric car campaign. The company aims to gradually introduce autonomous driving starting in 2020. More than 20 fully electric vehicle models are planned by 2025, with VW aiming to become the world leader in the sector.

With the Nvidia platform, users will be able to enhance systems throughout the life of the vehicle via software updates, and gain new capabilities as further developments are made in autonomous driving. With AI, Nvidia and VW expect the car of the future will learn to accurately assess situations and analyse the behaviour of others on the road, enabling it to make the right decisions.
