Walmart launches disc-to-digital service
Walmart announced a new service to convert physical DVDs and Blu-rays to digital copies for customers. Powered by its video streaming service Vudu, the in-store service is supported by the major film studios, including Paramount, Sony Pictures, Twentieth Century Fox, Universal Studios and Warner Bros. Starting 16 April in more than 3,500 stores, Walmart customers will be able to bring their DVD and Blu-ray collections to Walmart and receive digital access to the titles from the partnering studios. An equal conversion for standard DVDs and Blu-ray discs will cost USD 2. Standard DVDs can be upgraded to HD for USD 5. Only films for the participating studios are eligible for the service, and customers must create a Vudu account to access the digital copies. Walmart also supports the UltraViolet digital locker, which gives customers who purchase UltraViolet DVDs access to a digital copy over Vudu.
