Xiaomi launches Mi Play smartphone with MVNO in China

Xiaomi released its latest smartphone, the Mi Play, in the Chinese mainland for CNY 1,099. Every Mi Play smartphone sold comes with a SIM card that offers a free and unlimited one-year data package, which includes 10GB of LTE data every month. Xiaomi obtained an MVNO commercial licence in China in July after participating in a nationwide MVNO trial programme for three years.

Mi Play is powered by the MediaTek P35 SoC with a maximum clock speed is 2.3GHz. It comes in a single RAM/ROM option of 4GB and 64GB and features a 19:9, 5.84-inch, FHD+ full screen display protected by CorningGorilla Glass 5, a 12MP + 2MP AI dual camera setup and a 8MP front selfie camera supported by AI functions.

Mi Play will be available from 25 December in three color options.

Xiaomi's 5G Mi Mix 3 version to sport download speeds of up to 2 Gbps

Xiaomi unveiled the 5G verison of its Mi Mix 3 smartphone at the China Mobile Global Partner Conference. The phone features Qualcomm's Snapdragon 855 and X50 5G modem, and a maximum download speed of up to 2 Gbps. The phone will come to Europe next year, and then launch in China in the third quarter, with support for China Mobile's 5G network. During the conference, Xiaomi also demonstrated surfing and live video streaming using 5G.

Apple continues to grow its market share in the US and China, while Google's Android is winning more in Europe and Japan, according to third-quarter smartphone sales figures from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.
