Xiaomi takes lead in Chinese smartphone market in Q2
Xiaomi became the top smartphone vendor in its home market China in the second quarter, surpassing Samsung, according to research by Canalys. Xiaomi shipped an estimated 14.99 million phones versus 13.23 million for global leader Samsung. This gives Xiaomi around 14 percent of the market, compared to 12 percent for Samsung. Lenovo was in third place in China with an estimated 13.03 million smartphones shipped, followed by Yulong with 12.72 million and Huawei at 11.86 million. Other vendors accounted for another 42.67 million units in Q2.

Overall, China accounted for 37 percent of global smartphone shipments in the period, or a total 108.5 million phones. Canalys estimates that worldwide shipments totaled 292.4 million smartphones in Q2, an increase of 23 percent year-on-year and 5 percent more than in the first quarter. Despite challenges in China, Samsung retained its global lead with a 26 percent share, down from 32 percent a year earlier. It nonetheless remained ahead of Apple (12%), Huawei (7%) and Lenovo (5%). Canalys expects Lenovo to move up to third place in the market after its acquisition of Motorola, which took a 3 percent share and tenth place in the global market in Q2.
