Yahoo! CEO outlines new organisation
Yahoo! CEO Scott Thompson has outlined a new organisational structure for the company. In a memo sent to employees and seen by The Wall Street Journal, Thompson said he was splitting Yahoo! into three main groups: consumer, which oversees the company's media websites as well as its commerce-related, web search and e-mail services; regions, which is accountable for all of Yahoo's revenues and is broken up into Americas, Europe and Asia divisions that work with the company advertising customers; and technology, which will include the data centres and systems that power Yahoo's services as well as its advertising platforms, including Right Media ad exchange, which Yahoo is currently considering selling. The three main groups will be supported by the finance, legal, and human-resources departments. The changes effectively split up Yahoo's product group, which included many of its software programmers, placing many of them into the technology group. Some programmers also will be placed into the consumer group, the memo said. Thompson said the emphasis will be on growing the company's commerce activities, by working more closely with advertisers and agencies. The CEO will soon name a leader to the commerce unit, which falls under the broader consumer group.
