Yandex separates cloud platform into independent business unit

Russian internet search engine Yandex has separated its cloud platform Yandex.Cloud into an independent business unit. The decision was taken on the back of the platform's strong results in 2018-2020. Yandex.Cloud revenues have tripled since the start of the year.

More than 7,000 business customers currently use Yandex.Cloud for business development. The user base includes SMEs, large private companies and state-owned companies working in various segments of economy. Large companies generate more than 42 percent of incomes of the platform. The share of revenues from Platform as a Service (PaaS) has passed 35 percent.

According to Tigran Khudaveryan, CEO of the Yandex Group, Yandex.Cloud's user base has increased by 70 percent since the beginning of this year. The platform enables companies to customise cloud services for certain tasks and to develop own products based on machine learning, PC vision and Yandex voice recognition platforms.

Yandex.Cloud was launched in 2018, based on a platform developed by the company. The platform combines techservices for businesses and developers, including infrastructural services, data and development platforms, an ecosystem of serverless technologies, machine learning and AI services, and a marketplace for its partner services. Russian Post, Russian bank Alfa-Bank, the mobile retail chain M.Video and other companies are using the platform to develop their own projects.

The infrastructure of Yandex.Cloud is hosted on three Yandex data centres in Russia. Earlier this September, the company introduced a new service for the development of hybrid clouds, a software-hardware system based on Yandex.Cloud technologies and equipment. The system can be installed in the data centre of a customer and integrated with local corporate systems.
