Yota to appeal over cancelled licences

Russian Wimax operator Scartel, working under the Yota brand, said that it will push ahead with plans to build a LTE network in Russia, despite a decision by the telecommunications regulator Roskomnadzor to cancel some of its spectrum permits. Yota said the frequencies were acquired legally, and it plans to protect its interests in court. The operator received permits for radio frequencies in the 2.5 to 2.7 GHz band in 170 Russian cities this year. While the company originally expected to use the licensed spectrum to expand its Wimax services, it announced earlier this year a change in strategy to adopt LTE. Yota plans to launch its LTE network in Kazan in the autumn.
