YouTube Red, the subscription service for Google's video site, has reached around 1.5 million paying customers a year since its launch. Another 1 million are signed up for the free trial, multiple sources with knowledge of the situation told The Verge.

YouTube Red is available in the US, Mexico, Australia and New Zealand and also provides access to YouTube Music and the YouTube Kids service. It includes 'YouTube Originals' as well as no advertising. Google says that Red subscribers watch 75 percent more YouTube on their TVs than average users.

In a statement to The Verge, YouTube said it’s happy with the progress of Red, with "healthy growth of members each month". This is supporting increased investment in content, and by the end of 2016, YouTube will have released 20 Red Original series and movies, four of which have already been renewed.
