ZTE planning launch of 5G smartphone in the US
China’s ZTE hopes to launch a 5G smartphone in the US early next year or even at the end of this one, Lixin Cheng, CEO of the manufacturer’s US division told Bloomberg at CES. ZTE is looking to introduce a smartphone but Cheng noted that a 5G tablet or wireless-internet hub for homes were possibilities, too. 

The announcement comes as US authorities look more closely at Chinese phone makers. AT&T dropped its plans to sell Huawei smartphones in the US while ZTE itself was fined last year for breaching US sanctions on Iran. 

ZTE has already sold phones via both AT&T and Verizon in the US.

Verizon, KT showcase Samsung 5G tablets, conduct video call

Verizon chairman and CEO Lowell McAdam and KT chairman and CEO Chang-Gyu Hwang successfully conducted on 4 February the first-ever pre-commercial 5G video call on two fully functioning prototype 5G tablets developed by Samsung. McAdam participated on the international call from Minneapolis MN. Hwang participated from Seoul, Korea. This successful 5G transmission over prototype 5G devices is the result of an ongoing collaboration between the three companies.

Verizon drops plans to sell Huawei phones - report

Verizon has dropped all plans to sell phones from Chinese manufacturer Huawei Technologies, including the new Mate 10 Pro, under pressure from the US government, people familiar with the matter told Bloomberg. This follows a similar decision from rival AT&T earlier in the month to not launch Huawei devices.

SK Telecom creates task force to accelerate 5G launch

South Korean mobile operator SK Telecom has established a 200-member task force to accelerate the launch of its 5G services. The operator earlier said it plans to commercially launch its 5G network by 2019. The newly-created task force is led by Suh Sung-won, head of SK Telecom's mobile network operation (MNO) division, and comprises staff from four major divisions ― MNO, media, internet of things (IoT) /data and service platforms.

US bill looks to stop US govt from working with Huawei, ZTE

A new bill has been introduced to Congress to prohibit any part of the US government from working with Chinese telecom equipment makers Huawei and ZTE. Republican Congressman Mike Conaway, who introduced the bill, said Chinese commercial technology was a "vehicle for the Chinese government to spy on United States federal agencies, posing a severe national security threat".

AT&T drops plans to sell Huawei smartphones - report

AT&T has abandoned plans to start selling smartphones from Huawei, people familiar with the matter told the Wall Street Journal. Huawei had been expected to announce at CES that it had struck an agreement with AT&T, marking its first partnership with a major US mobile carrier.

ZTE has agreed to pay USD 892.36 million in fines for violating US sanctions.
