3 Denmark trials 3G switch-off at Roskilde Festival

3 Denmark said it will use the Roskilde Festival from 29 June to 06 July as a test for its 3G network switch-off. More than 130,000 spectators are expected to attend and constantly use the mobile internet, providing enabling the operator to try out switching to 4G in an environment similar to those of the future.

The operator plans to refarm some of the 2100 MHz frequencies that 3 Denmark has been using for its 3G network since the beginning of the century. Following the trial at Roskilde Festival, it expects to switch off 3G first in larger cities, where need for LTE capacity is greatest.

Danish operator TDC said its infrastructure arm, TDC Net, has begun plans to phase out its 3G network in order to release capacity for faster 4G and 5G mobile services. Mobile operator 3 Denmark has reported a fall in data use at this year's Roskilde Festival after years of rising consumption at the music event. Customers attending only used 1.7 TB of data on the 3 Denmark network this year on the festival grounds and campsite, which is the lowest since 2013. In 2019, they had used 87 TB between warm-up day and the last tent coming down.

3 Denmark has announced record mobile internet use at Roskilde Festival from 29 June to 07 July. Usage reached 87 TB, it said, which is 8 percent above the 2018 consumption. The day with the greatest traffic this year was 04 July, when spectators used 14.1 TB.

Airtel shuts down 3G network in Kolkata, refarms 900 MHz spectrum

Indian operator Bharti Airtel reports it has shut down its 3G network in Kolkata. Airtel mobile broadband services in city will now be available on the operator's 4G network. Airtel has refarmed the 900 MHz spectrum used for 3G to strengthen its 4G network. Airtel also said it will continue to provide 2G services in Kolkata to serve customers using feature phones.

Telenor Norway continues with 3G network shutdown

Telenor Norway said the counties of Sogn & Fjordane and More & Romsdal, as well as parts of Trondelag, are next on its 3G network shut-down schedule. The aim is to make more space for 4G. It is phasing out use of the 900 MHz band over the course of 2019 and will close the rest of its 3G network by the end of 2020.

3 Denmark erects 2 more masts in northern Jutland

3 Denmark said it has expanded its network in northern Jutland by setting up two new masts on the roads Hadsundvej in Arden and on Hejselbaekvej in Bindslev. They have 3G and 4G capacity to expand coverage booth indoors and outdoors, as well as to raise capacity.

3 Denmark says data traffic rises 44% year on year in March-May

Mobile operator 3 Denmark said that total internet traffic on its network from March to May 2019 was 44 percent higher than in the corresponding period in 2018. Usage per customer was up by 36 percent. The 27,000 new customers acquired in Q1 2019 accounts for the different rates.

Denmark completes auction of 700, 900, 2,300 MHz bands, TDC takes most lots

Denmark has completed its auction of the 700, 900 and 2,300 MHz bands, raising total proceeds of DKK 2.21 billion (EUR 296 million), the Danish Energy Agency announced. All four operators won frequencies in the 700 and 900 MHz band, while market leader TDC took the available lots in the 2,300 MHz band and 700 MHz SDL range.

Mobile operator 3 Denmark is entering the fixed wireless internet market, offering web service to residences and businesses using its 4G network. It said the system is easy to instal and the operator expects to compete with fixed broadband providers. It is offering retail customers 1 TB per month for DKK 230, a free Huawei B525 router worth DKK 1,699.

3 Denmark signs national roaming agreement with TDC, replacing deal with Telia

3 Denmark said that it has signed a roaming agreement with TDC, which will enable it and its Oister sub-brand's customers to use mobile services via TDC in places where 3 Denmark's own network does not reach. This replaces the roaming agreement with Telia Denmark, dating from 2015, and covers 2G, 3G and 4G alike. 3 Denmark added that its own LTE network covers 98 percent of the Danish population.

Telenor urges cross-industry cooperation to phase in VoLTE roaming as legacy networks shut down

Telenor has called on other operators to come together to establish VoLTE roaming, as the sector starts to shut down 2G and 3G networks. Telenor Denmark was the first European operator to launch outbound VoLTE roaming, on 01 October, and last month, Telenor Norway opened for inbound VoLTE traffic from its Danish sibling. The industry's VoLTE roaming implementation pace has been very slow so far and it is time to act, the company.
