
The 3 Group grew its active customer base 13 percent in Europe last year to over 25.0 million at year-end. Postpaid customers rose by 11 percent to 16.9 million, and prepaid users rose by 18 percent to 8.1 million. ARPU was down 1 percent over the year to EUR 20.86 per month. 3 said each active customer averaged 25.4 GB of data use last year, while its total data traffic jumped to over 25,000 petabytes from 22,100 in 2013.
The mobile operator recorded revenues of HKD 65.6 billion in Europe, up 6 percent from 2013, and mobile service revenues rose 9 percent to HKD 49.5 billion. The company increased EBITDA 23 percent to HKD 15.6 billion, the EBITDA margin improved to 30 percent from 27 percent in 2013, and EBIT rose 42 percent to HKD 6.9 billion, parent company Hutchison Whampoa reported. With the exception of Italy, all operations in 3 Group Europe increased their contributions to group earnings during the year.
The company said it profited from cost synergies in Austria and Ireland after its takeovers there. Hutchison said it will continue to look for consolidation opportunities in its markets, after already agreeing to buy O2 UK. The 3 Group increased its capital expenditure last year to HKD 11.3 billion from HKD 10.2 billion in 2013, while free cash flow also improved strongly, to HKD 4.3 billion from HKD 2.5 billion.
