3GPP delays next 5G standards by 3 months

The 3GPP announced a small delay in the completion of its next releases of 5G network standards. Release 16 will be 'frozen' in June, three months later than planned, and Release 17 also shifts three months later, in late 2021.

The decision was taken at its most recent plenary meeting. The 3GPP decided in February to hold all its meetings online due to the coronavirus epidemic.

The Release 16 ASN.1 and OpenAPI specification freeze will also be completed in June, as previously planned. The Release 17 stage 3 'freeze', when no further changes are allowed, is now planned for September 2021, and the Release 17 ASN.1 and OpenAPI specification freeze will be in December 2021.
