Alibaba to launch MVNO services in June
Chinese e-commerce group Alibaba plans to launch its first mobile services in June. The company is working with China Telecom, China Unicom, and China Mobile to provide 3G data and voice services. In May, the company will open pre-registrations for mobile phone numbers starting with "170". The mobile packages will be sold through Alibaba Group's e-commerce platforms, Taobao Marketplace and Tmall.com, and can be paid for via Alipay, the company's e-payment affiliate. Alibaba Group unit HiChina received an MVNO licence in January.

China to award new MVNO licenses to 7-8 companies- report

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) is currently in the process of approving applications for new MVNO licenses, Marbridge Daily reports, citing an industry source. The new MVNO permits are expected to be issued within one to two months. According to the source,  a total of 7-8 companies will obtain licenses in the upcoming issuance, including China Mobile MVNO partners 21Vianet, ZTE's subsidiary SeeCom Technology, Yinsheng E-Pay, Dr. Peng Telecom & Media Group and China PTAC.

Alibaba launches QR code strategy

Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba Group has officially launched its "Mashang Tao" business strategy and the merchant QR code platform, designed to increase the integration of QR codes into Alibaba's family of e-commerce sites, Marbridge Daily reports. China totals 19 MVNO licences issued

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has already awarded MVNO licenses to 19 private companies, Marbridge Daily writes. In 2012, the MIIT launched a directive encouraging private investment in China's telecommunications industry, which boosted trials in the MVNO segment. The ministry expects the number of MVNO users to grow to 50 million by the end of 2015.

Alipay signs agreement with South Korea's Lotte.com

Chinese e-commerce firm Alibaba Group's payment unit, Alipay, has signed an agreement with South Korean online shopping mall Lotte.com. The deal will enable Chinese shoppers to purchase products from South Korea and pay in Chinese currency using their Alipay accounts. Earlier this year, Japan's Rakuten and UK e-commerce website ASOS added Alipay as a payment option. Yahoo! Japan will also begin accepting Alipay in June. Alipay has agreements with more than 1,500 overseas merchants from over 34 countries.

China's first MVNO goes live

T.Mobile, a unit of Telephone World Digital Group, has launched an MVNO on the local market. T.Mobile thus becomes China's first mobile virtual network operator, offering mobile voice and data services, Xinhua reports. The MNO uses the China Telecom network to provide its services. The China Telecom MVNO offer is currently available in Hangzhou, capital of east China's Zhejiang Province, but will be gradually expanded to other parts of Zhejiang, the company said.

Alibaba, UCWeb to start new mobile search service

Chinese e-commerce group Alibaba and web browser maker UCWeb are joining forces to introduce a new mobile search service, the Wall Street Journal reported. UCWeb will maintain a controlling stake in the new Shenma joint venture, which will include employees who previously worked at Baidu and Google. UCWeb chief executive Yu Yongfu will become chairman. Alibaba doubles Q4 net profit

Chinese e-commerce group Alibaba doubled its net profit in the fourth quarter of 2013, to USD 1.349 billion from USD 642 million a year earlier. The result was reported by its shareholder Yahoo!, which has a 24 percent stake in the Chinese company. Alibaba to buy AutoNavi

Digital maps and navigation provider AutoNavi Holdings has entered into a definitive merger agreement to be acquired by an affiliate of e-commerce group Alibaba Group. Under the agreement, AutoNavi shareholders of the company will receive USD 5.25 in cash per ordinary share or USD 21.00 in cash per American Depositary Share. Alipay to invest in mobile payment security

The payment unit of Chinese e-commerce firm Alibaba Group, Alipay, will invest CNY 40 million to create an online payment security investment fund. The fund, which will be created with other companies, will focus on mobile payments as the mobile payments industry is growing fast and requires additional security, according to Alipay.
