All 3 billion Yahoo accounts affected by 2013 breach - Verizon

Yahoo’s new parent Verizon has revealed that every single customer account was likely affected by the August 2013 data breach at the internet company. "The company recently obtained new intelligence and now believes, following an investigation with the assistance of outside forensic experts, that all Yahoo user accounts were affected by the August 2013 theft," said Verizon in a statement. As a result, the hack affected some three billion accounts, or three times as many as Yahoo previously disclosed in December 2016. User account information such as email addresses and passwords were stolen, but not payment card data or bank account information, said Verizon.

The news comes after Verizon completed its acquisition of Yahoo's core internet assets for USD 4.48 billion in June. The operations were combined with Verizon’s AOL business to create Oath, which now includes over 50 media and technology brands.

A US district judge last month ruled that the victims of three data breaches suffered by Yahoo between 2013 and 2016 have standing to sue the company.
