Altice Europe sets up Fastfiber wholesale network unit in Portugal

Altice Europe has set up Fastfiber (formerly Altice Portugal FTTH), a new company to manage wholesale access to its fibre network in Portugal. This follows Morgan Stanley Infrastructure Partners’ acquisition of a 49.99 percent stake in Fastfiber, which values values the company at EUR 4.6 billion.

Fastfiber claims to be the largest FTTH wholesaler in Portugal, with around 4 million homes passed at year-end 2019. The company comprises of all Meo’s fibre assets (FTTH and dark fibre) in Portugal and will sell wholesale services to all operators at the same financial terms. Meo will sell technical services to Fastfiber for the construction, maintenance and subscriber connection to the fibre network.

Portuguese regulator approves Fastfiber/Fibroglobal merger

Portugal's National Communications Authority (Anacom) approved the acquisition by Fastfiber, the FTTH joint venture of Altice Portugal and Morgan Stanley investments funds, of sole control of wholesale operator Fibroglobal. The approval was granted following the request addressed by the Competition Authority.

Altice says public support needed for full fibre coverage

The CEO of Altice Portugal, Alexandre Fonseca, told Lusa that public investments or incentives are necessary to achieve full coverage of Portugal with fibre networks. Even with investments from private operators such as Altice, it is not possible to cover 100 percent of the population, he said. Regarding the operator's commitment made in September 2015 to reach 5.3 million homes passed with fibre, he said that the company is less than 200,000 homes from reaching the goal.

Altice Portugal Q1 revenues up 2.6% to EUR 522 million

Altice Portugal ended the first quarter of 2020 with revenues of EUR 522.3 million, up by 2.6 percent year-on-year, driven by the increase in fixed and mobile contract customers. EBITDA increased by 1.8 percent to EUR 210 million, and capex grew by 3.8 percent to EUR 104 million. This resulted in operating cash flow little changed year-on-year at EUR 106 million.

Altice Europe pays down debt, extends maturity of credit facility

Altice Europe said it will be paying back EUR 668 million of its Altice Corporate Financing facility and also extending that facility to end June 2023 from end June 2021, with the coupon lowered to 6.625 percent form 6.85 percent. The move is part of the company's plan to refinance debt and set up a simpler capital structure.

Altice Portugal says pandemic has 'major impact' on revenues

The CEO of Altice, Alexandre Fonseca, has told Lusa that the Covid-19 pandemic is having a "big impact" on revenues, since the increase in traffic is not reflected in the business. He explained that fixed network traffic has grown by 60 percent and TV has seen 30 percent additional growth. In addition, Altice Portugal has made significant investments of more than a dozen million euros in strengthening the networks that support people working from home.

Altice Portugal to sell 49% of FTTH network to Morgan Stanley

Altice Europe's subsidiary Meo has signed an agreement with Morgan Stanley Infrastructure Partners to create a nationwide fibre wholesaler in Portugal. This is the first time in Europe than an incumbent telecom operator separates its fibre into a dedicated wholesale vehicle, Altice said.
