Amazon eyes more feature films, football rights

Amazon wants to produce 16 feature films per year and win an Oscar, CEO Jeff Bezos told German paper Die Welt. The idea is for the films to be released in movie theatres and then go quickly onto Amazon's online service. The first film "Chi-Raq" directed by Spike Lee was recently released. 

Bezos said he is also mulling acquiring the rights to show football championships such as the English Premier League and Germany's Bundesliga.

Amazon Germany sells Motorola Moto X Force for EUR 726

Amazon is selling the Motorola Moto X Force for EUR 726 without any SIM lock or contract, tariftipp.de reports. The smartphone has a 5.4-inch quad HD screen made with the Moto ShatterShield technology, a system of several layers, with a bendable AMOLED display that can absorb shocks. It also features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 octa-core processor, a memory of 3 GB and an expandable storage memory of 32 GB or 64 GB. It has a 21-megapixel camera on the back and runs on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop.

Amazon plans own package delivery service in Germany

Amazon plans to launch its own package delivery service in Germany, according to teltarif.de citing an interview with Amazon manager Bernd Schwenger in the German traffic newspaper DVZ. He said that Amazon plans to set up own distribution centres close to the largest German cities to become less dependent on its current distribution partners DHL and Hermes. Amazon Germany offers 1 mln e-books on Kindle Unlimited

Amazon announced that it offers more than 1 million German and international ebooks as well as more than 2,000 Audible audio books through Kindle Unlimited for EUR 9.99 per month. The service is available with the Kindle reading apps for iOS, Android and Windows Phone operating systems. New subscribers can test the service free for one month.

Amazon Germany warehouses to strike until Christmas

Workers at German warehouses of Amazon were called out on a new strike by labour union Ver.di on 21 December as part of a long-running dispute over pay and conditions. According to a Ver.di statement, workers at six of the nine Amazon warehouses were joining the strike, which will run until 24 December at four of the centres and for shorter periods at the others. Amazon released a statement saying it plans to convert another 200 seasonal into permanent jobs in 2016.

Amazon workers exempt from Sunday work in Graben

The administrative court in Augsburg, Germany upheld a complaint from the union Ver.di and prohibited Sunday work at the Amazon site in Graben. This was first permitted by the District government Schwaben. The court stated that there are no legal conditions for the approval of Sunday working according to the Working Hours Act.

Amazon Germany reported it reached a new sales record with its last-minute offers, receiving 5.4 million orders on 14 December. The most popular items were consumer electronics, toys and consumer goods. Until 22 December, Amazon will launch more last-minute offers daily.

Amazon workers exempt from Sunday work in Rheinberg

The administrative court in Dusseldorf has dismissed a submission by Amazon to permit Sunday working at the Rheinberg site on 20 December. The judges based their decision on a lack of legal preconditions. They also argued that the significant increase in the workload in the time leading up to Christmas constitutes a legitimate interest of the employees in a non-working Sunday.
