Apple Pay goes live in China

Apple has launched its Apple Pay mobile payment system in China, in partnership with Chinese bankcard association UnionPay. Chinese shoppers can now use the Apple Pay contactless payment system to make purchases, Xinhua news agency reports. Users of the iPhone 6 or more advanced versions, certain iPads and Apple Watches will be able to use their NFC-enabled devices to purchase items in stores across China.

20 Chinese banks have allowed their customers to tie their bank accounts to Apple Pay, and UnionPay is providing compatible point-of-sale (POS) terminals for users to complete the transactions.

The contactless payment system is also available at 1,700 McDonald's locations across China. Apple also lists Lane Crawford, 7-Eleven, Burger King, KFC among merchants already accepting Apple Pay in China. Chinese restaurant review and group buying services Meituan and Dazhongdianping and online retailer Dangdang have also made Apple Pay-compatible versions of their apps available to iPhone users.
