Apple sells out iPhone 5 pre-orders quickly

Apple appears to have sold out its initial stock of the new iPhone 5. The smartphone went on sale at midnight California time on 14 September. Pre-orders were initially scheduled for delivery on the launch date in stores, set for 21 September, but the Apple website now shows delivery times of 2-3 weeks. The three US operators launching the phone on 21 September in shops - Sprint, Verizon and AT&T - also show delivery times of 2-3 weeks for pre-orders. AT&T announced on 17 September that it set a sales record with the iPhone 5 over the weekend, making it the fastest-selling iPhone the company has ever offered. Customers ordered more iPhones from AT&T than any previous model both on its first day of pre-orders and over the weekend. The phone starts at USD 199 for the 16GB model.
