Apple wins USD 1 bln in damages in Samsung patent suit

A jury in the US has awarded Apple USD 1 billion in damages for patent infringement by Samsung. The California jury found that Samsung "willfully" infringed three of Apple's software patents with its tablets and two with its smartphones. This included the patented appearance and features of the iPhone, such as its "rubberbanding" scrolling, sleek glass front and grid of colourful, round-cornered apps. In addition, Apple won its claim of violations of so-called trade dress, or how a product looks. The jury rejected all of Samsung's patent claims against Apple. Samsung told Bloomberg news agency that it will ask the judge to overturn the verdict. If the judge won't overturn the award, Samsung said it will appeal the case. The "verdict should not be viewed as a win for Apple, but as a loss for the American consumer," Samsung said. "It is unfortunate that patent law can be manipulated to give one company a monopoly over rectangles with rounded corners, or technology that is being improved every day by Samsung and other companies." Apple has also requested a ban on US sales of Samsung products. The request will be heard at a court hearing on 20 September. The judge may also then adjust the damages award.
